José María Figueres chaired the Sustainable Ocean Summit 2013 (SOS 2013) the only international, cross-sectoral ocean sustainability conference designed by and for the private sector.
SOS 2013 was being held in Washington D.C. to further advance leadership and collaboration among the diverse ocean business community in addressing marine environment and sustainability challenges.
The SOS was organized by the World Ocean Council, an unprecedented international, cross-sectoral industry leadership alliance on 'Corporate Ocean Responsibility'.
The theme of SOS 2013 was "Oceans 2050 - The Ocean Business Community and Sustainable Seas".
This event brought together a wide range of ocean industries, including: shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, renewable energy (wind, wave, tidal), mining, ports, dredging, cables, pipelines, the maritime legal, financial and insurance communities, and others.
